Doxazosin relaxes smooth muscles that might otherwise restrict blood flow or, in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), urine flow. Thus the medication is used to lower blood pressure in patients with hypertension and prevent urinary retention in those with BPH.

Patients also buy doxazosin for off-label use in treating erectile dysfunction (ED), another benefit of improved blood flow; however, medications that lower blood pressure can also cause ED. In addition to low blood pressure symptoms, patients may also experience:

• Sleepiness
• Dry mouth
• Nasal irritation
• Headache
• Sleepiness or fatigue
• More frequent urination

The above side effects aren't cause for concern unless they become severe enough to be disruptive. These also typically stop occurring as the body adjusts to treatment.
